Massage for Mental Health

Massage has been used for thousands of years as a treatment for all kinds of ailments.  From Julius Caesar reportedly using massage therapy to treat his epilepsy, to Tourette’s sufferers using massage to help control their movement “tics”, to the modern-day worker using massage to simply reduce stress and anxiety, massage is recognised as benefiting a wide variety of conditions.

Massage can help reduce anxiety and depression

The often-powerful treatment effects are thought to be due to a range of factors, including increased blood flow, release of endorphins, relaxation of muscle tissue and stimulation of sensory nerve endings to inhibit pain.  But perhaps of greater significance is the benefit of massage on mental health.  There is evidence to support massage being effective at reducing depression and anxiety.  It is no surprise, then, that there is also suggestion that massage can significantly improve sleep quality.

Massage can be associated with a strong emotional response – likely due to a combination of sensory input helping to calm the nervous system, combined with the release of endorphins (“happy hormones”).  Increasingly, people are recognising that massage is not just a “luxury” treatment used as a self-indulgence, but rather is an effective – often essential – method as part of a successful treatment regime to manage and overcome depression and anxiety.
